Medical Officer - Palliative Medicine Specialist - Hawkes Bay
Our client is seeking a Medical Officer to lead their small unit providing palliative care for the people of the Hawkes Bay area. This is a great opportunity to work for one of New Zealand’s leading Charities and play a substantial role in the fantastic work they do.
Please see below an outline of the responsibilities and tasks related to this exciting job role.
• Provide clinical leadership for the hospice team
• Hold responsibility for assessment, co-ordination, referral and care delivery to patients and ensuring appropriate prioritisation of requests for support and care from other health service providers.
• Along with the Principal Nurse, ensure hospice medical, nursing and pharmacy staff are able to access appropriate support in delivering palliative care service.
• Oversee pharmacy team to ensure adequate supply, safe storage and control of drugs in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Oversight and development of medical roster covering 24-hour period/7 days a week.
• Ensuring peer review processes and ongoing development opportunities exist which extend and support the medical and pharmacy teams.
• Provide fully documented level of care
• Communicate as appropriate with patients, families, staff and other health professionals with regard to treatment
• Perform the practitioner services as an integral member of the care team.
• Support quality improvement training and development for the clinical team, and encourage wider participation in activities and projects.
• Encouraging and overseeing clinical audit
• Oversight of a comprehensive, organised clinical documentation system
• Leading research and development activity
• Ensuring that appropriate protocols and clinical practice guidelines are documented and regularly reviewed.
• Active involvement in training of medical students attending.
• Encouraging the development of the other staff to acquire skills in teaching roles
• Input into planning of training sessions and curriculum development
• Contributing to interdisciplinary teaching opportunities
• Developing professional relationships with other education providers
• Maintain an effective ongoing professional relationship with the District Health Board, and the Planning Funding and Performance division.
• Review and evaluate new contracts with appropriate consultation/input from the hospice team and in collaboration with the Chief Executive Manager.
• Review and evaluate contract variations in consultation with the Chief Executive and Manager.
• Maintain an ongoing and effective relationship with General Practice teams, community providers and others.
• Provide clinical input to the PSEC Board and Executive team in governance, management decisions and organisational planning.
